About a year ago my dermatologist finally convinced me—after a little scare which involved a nasty basal cell and a fairly large knife—that as a freckled-skinned whitey living in California I really need to apply a moisturizer with sun protection on my face and arms every day. Annoyingly, I spent the last year amassing a medicine cabinet full of expensive SPF-infused moisturizers with attractive labels that really irritate my skin. About six months ago I settled on a really good and fairly light and not too scented lotion, but I worried about the parabens it contained—once you have a skin cancer scare, you start paying attention to ingredients. So my new favorite is Zia's fragrance-free Triple Protection Lotion because not only is it cheaper (and who doesn't like to save a few bucks?), it's got broader spectrum protection (UVA and UVB) from the sun, and the vitamin E and linseed and rosemary oil help keep my face from getting irritated; the result of which will hopefully be less knives in my future at the doctor's office. —Charles Runnette
