Kick the Bottle Habit:

An imported one-liter plastic water bottle burns through ¼-liter of oil just for the pumping, bottling and shipping process. A 16-oz bottle can cost up to $2. Tap water costs just $0.0015 per gallon. Save yourself some money and reach for the tap.

Give Yourself a Pretty Hand

It used to be that if you wanted a not-so-toxic nail polish your options were few and far between. Today, that's improving and most companies—including Revlon, OPI, and L'Oreal—have removed three of the top ingredient offenders from their polishes: formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical (used to strengthen nails); toluene, a petroleum-based ingredient that can damage the nervous system (used to help polish dry faster); and dibutyl phthalate or DBP, a chemical that has been linked to birth defects (used to make nail polish flexible). While we're all for fewer chemicals in all of our beauty products, we still want a polish that comes in amazing colors and doesn't chip five seconds after it dries. We've found it in SpaRitual's new-for-fall Intuitive line, which is free of the three above-mentioned nasties as well as synthetic dyes (it's also vegan, whereas some polishes contain animal by-products). The collection comes in a selection of subdued metal shades including those shown left to right: Savoir Faire (rose crème), Savant (winter white), Sharp (silvery champagne with iridescent glitter), Shrewd (a warm chocolate with silver shimmer). Pick your favorite and B.Y.O.P. (bring your own polish) to your nail salon for your next manicure so you—and your manicurist—can breathe a little easier.
