Astonishingly delicate and original, a ring by U.K. designer Ruth Tomlinson is one that will garner umpteen compliments for a lifetime (or more). Ask Maggie Gyllenhaal, who owns her jewelry.
These rings are made by hand, which spews far fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases than mass-made jewelry.

There are memories in our suburban, strip-mall-filled past that stand out. For us and our best friend, it was a teenage summer, away from baby oil, bikinis, and burgeoning melanoma, and inside a marine biology lab, learning the taxonomy of oceanic critters. (The highlight was a field trip to Montauk, where we dove and gathered specimens in snorkeling gear … and baby oil and bikinis.) The seed was planted, and a passion for the ocean was born. Jewelry designer Ruth Tomlinson has taken hers and combined it with gold-, silver-, and gem-smithing talents and a magical aesthetic. Hailing from landlocked Manchester, England, Tomlinson composes bouquets out of porcelain baby coral polyps, and in one masterpiece called Hoard, evokes a sunken-treasure tableau around one tiny circle with pearls, gold, and gems. We know this is what we're pining for, so chip in with your sibs: Your mom will want it, too.
