Oliveira Ocean Collection Anemone fabric

Why It's Good:

These fabrics are strong enough for Superbowl-couch-sitting, but made for décor lovers who appreciate super-stylish interior design. Created by twin sisters (one of whom designed fabrics for Polo Ralph Lauren and Dana Buchman), these textiles are unassailably elegant, with a touch of unrestrained wildness to make them interesting. Plus, if you're not one to run fabrics through the sewing machine to make pillows, they will make them up for you (info in buying notes, below).

Why It's Green:

It's about time hemp went to the Hamptons, style-wise. And why not? Hemp was first used as the fabric for the American flag and the paper that our Constitution is written on. Oliveira's fresh, sophisticated Anemone design (our favorite) is printed with water-based, non-toxic dyes on a mix of fast-growing hemp and organic cotton, both of which are grown without planet- and people-poisoning pesticides. Even their stationery is made out of recycled hemp paper.

Instant Pretty for Your Place

Everybody has their weaknesses. For me, it's fabric, the way it sparks the mind's eye and new home projects. I'll pick up a remnant of lemony English silk brocade and impractically upholster a bench with it; or buy yards of vintage pop '60s graphics to make into improbable (and rather dominating) drapes. I try not to fall in love with new fabrics—they can be expensive, have funny chemical-y smells and don't come with the sense of mystery that something re-used does. However, there are times I can't help myself, such as now, with Oliveira's Ocean Collection of durable hemp/cotton fabrics (which, being organic and nontoxic, do not off-gas). You know you're smitten when you're already mentally putting away pillows that were perfectly fine before you've laid eyes on something like Oliveira's fabulous red Coral Anemone pattern. I see a yard or two turning into new accent cushions on my couch—and because fabrics have a way with the imagination, am already recovering a white Swedish loveseat for the beach house in my mind.
