Unlike most farm-raised fish, which must eat other fish to grow, tilapia is an omnivore that can thrive on soy, corn, wheat, algae and plant waste. Plus, tilapia farms can be housed indoors where resulting wastewater and pollution are better controlled. Why It's Good:

We almost don't want to share this spot with you—it's one of our favorite places, tucked away at the top of Manhattan in woodsy Fort Tryon Park (home to the medieval art and architecture marvel, The Cloisters). It's charming, it's chic, and the quietly elegant crowd sips sidecars and dirty martinis in their leopard-print coats at the long bar.

Why It's Green:

A pet project of Bette Midler's nonprofit New York Restoration Project (dedicated to the reclamation, restoration, and general greenification of parks, community gardens, and open spaces in the city), the 1930s-era cafe was revamped in 2001, along with a major makeover of the vast, view-studded Fort Tryon Park. The once-rundown acreage is now the bright and airy home to families, dog-walkers, and nature-lovers, hosting community events like the annual Renaissance Fair. Eat, drink, and be merry at the New Leaf—all net proceeds go toward keeping this park green and clean.
