Water Saver:

Fill half of your sink with water for washing dishes instead of letting your tap run. According to the American Water Works Association, the average U.S. household uses 130,000 gallons of water per year. If they used just 50% less, we could save the equivalent of seven million barrels of oil per year.

Mary’s Exchange Consignment Shop

Why It's Good:

Small and quaint, this little consignment shop is located in sleepy Noe Valley, on its own outside the main vintage neighborhoods. Stroll in on your way home from grabbing a snicker doodle at Noe Valley Bakery or just after your yoga class at Castro Bikram. Don't miss the jewelry and accessories in the case next to the old-fashioned hatboxes. The owner is very friendly and will happily sort through any items you might want to sell at her shop.

Why It's Green:

Look good and feel good, because reusing clothing is a form of recycling. When you reuse clothing you do the environment a favor because reused clothing requires no new materials, fuel, or energies for manufacturing; virtually the only environmental cost you pay is shipping.

Where To Get It:

Visit Mary's Exchange at 1302 Castro Street in San Francisco; call 415-282-6955 for more information.
