Conscientious Caviar:

Farm-raised sturgeon caviar is a great alternative to caviar from the Caspian Sea, where Beluga sturgeon have become so overfished for their eggs, they're on the verge of extinction. And unlike farmed salmon roe, cultivated sturgeon isn't raised in pens in open water, but in tanks on land, where waste can be more easily disposed of. — Slowfoodnation.org

Angel and Insects

As a heartless kid, I didn't flinch when my sister used a magnifying glass to burn ants on our backyard patio. As an indie-movie-watching adult, I quailed at the heart-pounding-ly vivid depiction of bug life in the incomparable doc Microcosmos, in which the view is so up close and personal, you feel like you're fighting it out for survival alongside ginormous beetles. But be you cruel or kind, ceramic artist Laura Zindel's creations will remind you that you can't help but be fascinated by insects, for their tireless industry and amazing design. Her platters, vases and other serving pieces are a study in symmetry and inspired juxtapositions—delicately perfect drawings on white accented by heavy iron edging — that would go well in both feminine and rustic surroundings. And if you think Zindel completely takes the ugh out of bugs, check out her snake imagery!
