La-Z-Boy's EcoComfort furniture line

Why It's Good:

La-Z-Boy is not just a recliner company anymore. Stationary (and yes, reclining) sofas and loveseats, sleep sofas, upholstered chairs and the world-famous La-Z-Boys themselves make up a large selection of shapes and styles to suit a wide variety of decorating styles, design snobs notwithstanding. The 22-choice line of EcoComfort fabrics includes prints, solids, cottons and ecosuedes that as comfortable are as they are attractive.

Why It's Green:

Select pieces feature cushions made with soy-based foam that comes from soybeans, which are a highly renewable resource, while traditional foam cushions are toxic and non-biodegradable. EcoComfort fabrics are all OEKO TEX-certified, and include ecosuede, made from recycled plastic bottles. Every frame La-Z-Boy sells can be upholstered in EcoComfort fabric.

Where To Get It:

Carlyle Recliner, $899, as shown in an EcoComfort Kent upholstery fabric, with soy-based foam cushions. The EcoComfort collection is scheduled by end of May 2008 to be in stores, including La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, La-Z-Boy Comfort Studio dealers and anywhere genuine La-Z-Boy furniture is sold. Be a Lazy Green Girl: Lounge in This La-Z-Boy

For some, furniture buying is based solely on that old Architecture 101 adage: "Form follows function." Loosely translated, that means: "Who the hell cares what it looks like as long as it's comfortable?" But we can't play that way: What we buy has to be comfortable and beautiful, and being that we're green, of course, eco-smart, too. And while we are deeply desirous of vintage furniture classics, which we ogle in the Museum of Modern Art and decorating sites and magazines, when it comes to actually resting our weary bones, we confess what we want in our living rooms is something, well, a bit cozier, and if it reclines, all the better. La-Z-Boy, America's favorite (and largest) manufacturer of upholstered furniture, has been with us on that tip for decades, and now they've joined the eco-troops and gone green. Hitting stores end of May are brand new, eco-friendly options for their popular sofas, chairs and those classic La-Z-Boy recliners we already love (whether we admit to it or not). We like it. We think we'll go take a nap on one now.—Julie Fowler
