Eat to Ease Consumption:

How can a good breakfast make us less energy-dependent? If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil each week.

Onyx Hotel

Why It's Good:

This pet-friendly hotel is located near the North End (Boston's Little Italy) and the shops and restaurants of Faneuil Hall. Rooms have luxurious bedding, red suede chairs, and custom desks except for the, er, "Britney Spears Foundation room," which is a replica of the pop singer's bedroom complete with some of her framed platinum records and curios from her personal collection. We don't get it, either.

Why It's Green:

The rooms are cleaned with environmentally friendly cleaning products, all complimentary lobby coffee is organic, shade grown, and fair trade, the hotel uses energy-efficient bulbs in some areas and they have low-flow systems for faucets, toilets, and showers. Unused amenity bottles are donated to local charities. The Onyx was awarded the 2006 American Hotel & Lodging Association Good Earth Housekeeping Award.
