you started eco-coach about a year ago, can you tell us a little bit about it?on the individual side, i do in-home consultations, helping people to become greener, healthier, and more energy efficient. on the business side, i do sustainability consulting. it’s a mix of being environmentally friendly and looking at the economics of it, to make sure that they all go well together. i also give workshops and i help people with renovations, things like that.what was your inspiration for starting eco-coach?i've been passionate about the environment for 20 years, but one of the things i got excited about was when i had pregnant friends and i was able to help them. they were worried about so many things in the household, but they weren't thinking about cleaners or indoor air quality or the fact that their kid was going to be crawling on a carpet full of chemicals. i gave them advice, and then i figured, i might as well educate more people about it. so i started out doing workshops for moms, especially moms who had children with asthma or allergies. then, because i have a management consultant background, the sustainability was a natural progression. there is demand for both and i love doing both—helping people and businesses become greener and more sustainable.what are the most common issues you encounter when helping individuals to go green?one thing i've found is that a lot of people will try to be green but they overlook the basics—household cleaners, carpets (those actually off gas), and light bulbs that are easily changeable.when was your eco-awakening?i've always loved hiking, climbing, and mountain biking so i do a lot of things outdoors. just seeing and learning about the correlation between what we're doing and what's happening to the outdoors is really where it started. it was just a passion, and i didn't think about putting it into a career until two or three years ago. i finally made the leap.what green habits do you have?i drive a blue prius. his name is zeus. i just kind of took him off the lot, and that was his name. people think i'm crazy, but that's okay.is there a green product that you're obsessed with right now?honestly, my shower filter makes me really happy. i really notice a difference. it takes out the chlorine and i don't have to inhale the gases and they don't go into my skin, which is a lot softer, without the lotion. it's been great and i really enjoy using it. it's essentially kind of the thing that reminds me everyday that i'm being healthy.have you ever had an eco-conflict and how did you resolve it?i love reading books, but i don't want to buy them and promote more paper and more trees needing to be cut down. i'm trying to either use a library or borrow books. obviously, there's the inherent conflict because you want the author to be making money off of the book, but you also want to be promoting some green products. sometimes i buy a book if i really want it and then i'll donate it and kind of keep it going.what's your eco-sin?my eco-sin is my jeans, which are not made of organic materials. i'm not quite sure if they were made in a sweatshop, although i really hope they weren't. but i love them, they fit great, and i think i'm glued to them. i don't think i'm ready to give them up. if they can come up with an organic line, i'll be right there buying it.
