  • Best Budget-Friendly Green Beauty Buys
when a tank of gas can cost upwards of $50, it's difficult to justify paying the same amount for an earth-friendly face cream or bottle of shampoo, even if they're loaded with organic ingredients. heck, we had a hard time parting with that much cash when gas was 99 cents per gallon (remember those days?!). still, we'll never stop bringing you the goods at every price point, as some of us enjoy splurging on expensive eco-perfume the way others splurge on new vegan shoes. for everyone else, we've come up with this list of sprig's favorite bargain green beauty brands. because being on a budget shouldn't mean you have to buy chemical-laden cosmetics. the best part: you can find them all in places you probably already shop, so you won't waste any gas driving around town to pick them up. saving money never looked so good.best green makeup: physicians formula organic wear ($6.95 to $13.95; at mass market retailers, drugstores, www.organicwearmakeup.com): the physicians formula cosmetics brand has been a fixture on drugstore shelves for years, but it's the offerings in the less than one year-old organic wear line that continue to impress. this spring, we fell hard for the lightweight tinted moisturizer and recently we got a sneak preview of three new products launching this month—an eye shadow duo, eyeliner pencil, and a lip gloss-lipstick hybrid. not only are the shade choices rich and wearable, but at $7.95 each, you don't have to settle for just one. all of the organic wear formulas are also made with certified organic ingredients and free of synthetic colors, fragrances and parabens. what's on the outside is just as green, as the packaging is completely recyclable. best family-friendly products: shea moisture ($1.99 to $19.99; target locations nationwide): new to target as of this summer, the shea moisture collection is made up of products for every skin type and every member of the family. the bath, body and skincare products are loaded with certified natural and organic ingredients such as pure shea butter, aloe vera, and jojoba oil, so they're gentle enough for the most delicate skin. plus, the shea moisture shave system contains everything a dad needs for a smooth, bump-free complexion—an african black soap facial wash & scrub, shea butter shave cream, tea tree herbal bump preventer, and after shave face cream & blemish corrector—and costs less than $20. most well-known and noteworthy: burt's bees ($2.99 to $24.99; mass market retailers, drugstores or www.burtsbees.com): unless you've been living off the grid for the last 24 years, then you're surely familiar with the now-iconic yellow packaging that houses some of the best and most affordable green beauty goods available. burt's bees products are everywhere, from supermarkets to drugstores, and each is as effective as the next. whether you're looking for a new anti-aging night cream that's 98.2% natural, made with tons of botanicals, and will only set you back $15, or a chemical-free sunscreen, burt's got you covered. best for the basics: pure & natural ($3.99 to $5.99; mass retailers like wal-mart, kmart, supermarkets, and drugstores): want to wash away the day the green way? check out the pure & natural brand, which currently makes nothing but a liquid hand soap, body wash and bar soap. all three are biodegradable and 98% natural and they come in three different ingredient combinations (our favorite is the almond oil & cherry blossom). the body wash and hand soap are packaged in recyclable plastic while the soap's 100% post consumer paper shell is embedded with seeds. plant the wrapping and watch it grow a few weeks later!  best natural skincare brand: noah's naturals  ($2.99 to $8.99; mass retailers like wal-mart and walgreens, or www.noahsnaturals.com): no matter how you care for your complexion or what combination of skincare products you rely on, noah's naturals has what you need. their skincare collection includes an antioxidant-rich anti-aging serum, a clay and herb mud mask, and a jojoba bead facial scrub, all for $8.99 or less. every product is paraben, petrolatum, propylene glycol, and phthalate-free and they're all made with eco-friendly, sometimes organic, ingredients. plus, the brand is a member of the one percent for the planet organization, so they donate 1% of their net income to environmental charities. best organic skincare brand: juice organics ($9.99 to $19.99, at mass retailers like target or www.juiceorganics.com): born from the juice beauty brand, which sells at higher prices (up to $45 for a serum!) in prestige beauty stores, the juice organics line is a no-frills collection of good-for-your-face cleansers, moisturizers, and treatment products. though the new line isn't packaged in glass bottles like the original, the products work just as well and are made using the same 100% certified organic juice base. they're also still free of parabens, petroleum derivatives, phthalates, and toluene. best hair care brand: giovanni organic hair care ($1.99 to $13.99; mass retailers like target, bed, bath, and beyond, and drugstores): our search for a natural, vegan, and organic shampoo and conditioner combo that works as well as mass market brands, yet costs less than professional products, has finally ended. giovanni organic hair care's tea tree triple threat invigorating shampoo and conditioner pack a refreshing peppermint-scented punch and leave hair looking healthy. but don't take our word for it: pick up the travel-size bottles and see for yourself. at only $1.99, you have nothing to lose. check out the brand's hair-styling aids, which like every product from giovanni (including their skin care range) are made with certified organic plant extracts and essential oils and are animal by-product and cruelty-free.
