People and the Planet:

Environmental devastation can lead to war...and worse. Global warming helped bring on the drought in Darfur, which caused farmers and herders to fight for limited land resources. Battle lines were drawn along ethnic lines, leading to today's genocide crisis. By reducing our carbon dioxide output, we can slow global warming. If you drive a hybrid, you can save 16,000 lbs. of CO2 and $3,750 per year.

Dirt Natural Candles

Why It's Good:

These candles make the perfect hostess gift, or buy one for yourself—there's a variety of scents to suit (or set) any mood.

Why It's Green:

Dirt candles are made of 100% natural soy wax (a vegetable by-product) rather than the paraffin wax (a petroleum by-product) used in most candles that gives off soot similar to diesel soot (and who wants to breathe that in?). The candles are biodegradable, and they're packaged in recycled glass and paper. The company donates a portion of its profits to charities, including the Nature Conservancy.

Here's Some Dirt They'll Really Dig

If you've spent the summer visiting your lovely friends at their beach house (country cottage, lakeside camp, mountain villa, fill in the blank), and you haven't yet done so, don't forget to thank them with a thoughtful end-of-summer gift. We're giving our favorite hostesses a scented candle from Dirt Natural Candles. The candles are made of soy wax (from organically grown soybeans), which burns slower than paraffin wax (a petroleum by-product that you really don't want your friends to be breathing in) so they last a lot longer. And they come in all kinds of fun names and scents, such as Nitty Gritty, PiggyBack Ride, and Chop Shop. We've decided to give out Day at the Beach—it smells of salty sea water and seaweed, and conjures up memories of the fun we had all summer. Hopefully it will do the same for our friends, and not remind them of that dog pee on the carpet, the broken wine glass, and, oh … maybe we'll send them a dozen.
