Think Before You Toss That TV:

Don't pitch that old TV when it's time to upgrade to HDTV. Recycling a single TV set saves the energy equivalent of 8 gallons of gas and reduces greenhouse gases by 81 lbs! For more info, visit http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/ecycling/r2practices.htm.

Why It's Good:

A former history teacher, owner Rachel Hirsch combined her love of lore with her love of fashion to create her positively charming vintage boutique History. Captivated by the past lives of vintage garments and the women who wore them, Rachel pens a little story on the tag of each of her pieces. For a gorgeous 40's black wrap dress she writes: "And boy did she love to dance—lindy hop, foxtrot, whatever. If there was music, she was dancing." We swear she wrote that about our grandmother! Filled with a well-picked selection of vintage finds, including gloves and jewelry she also carries a few new dresses and shoes.

Why It's Green:

Not only are you cutting down on waste by buying secondhand, and eliminating the materials, resources and energies that would otherwise have been used to produce something new, but also Rachel consigns almost all of her wares from local patrons, eliminating the need for shipping in goods, and thus cutting down even further on emissions.
