Giovanni Organic Hair Care Root 66 Max Volume Shampoo and Conditioner

Why It's Good:

Boosting hair’s body begins in the shower by using products that won't weigh your locks down. Giovanni Organic Hair Care's Root 66 Max Volume Shampoo (pictured left), Conditioner, and Volumizing Styling Gel (pictured right) contain soybean protein to strengthen strands, and botanical extracts and oils that hydrate naturally, instead of coating hair and leaving it greasy. Plus, they're lauryl and laureth sulfate-free so they won't strip hair of its essential, protective oils.

Why It's Green:

The cleansing and conditioning duo are loaded with certified organic botanicals and fruit extracts, such as mango, kiwi, aloe vera, and papaya. They're also paraben-, artificial color-, cruelty- and animal-byproduct-free and packaged in recyclable plastic bottles. And it's nice to know that the sweet (but not too sweet) floral fragrance is derived from essential oils instead of chemicals.

Body-Boosting Hair Tips

During summer, I suffer from limp-lock syndrome; as soon as humidity hits, my straight strands tend to look like over-cooked spaghetti. Most beauty magazines focus their summer hair advice on how to deal with frizz, so I decided to find out for myself what I can do. Turns out that for those of us with fine, straight hair, excess moisture in the air tends to settle on the surface of our strands (instead of penetrating the shaft and puffing it up, as it does for curly-haired girls), which weighs them down. To prevent adding excess weight, the key is to steer clear of heavy conditioners and styling products that can create buildup. Instead, try spritzing an anti-humidity hair spray right on your roots. Washing with light, protein-rich products in the shower can also help. This summer, I'm using Giovanni Organic Hair Care's Root 66 Max Volume products; I can't get enough of their long-lasting, but far from overpowering, fragrance (which is naturally derived from essential oils), plus they're loaded with protein to beef up my weak locks. And it doesn't hurt that they’re also earth-and-animal-friendly—enriched with organic extracts and paraben and cruelty-free. Looks like my limp locks won't be coming with me on summer vacation this year!—Megan O'Neill
