Gap
Recycled wool hobo from Gap
Why It's Good:
Uptown, downtown—this cute, slouchy hobo works all around. Comes in warm fall/winter colors like red, chocolate, camel and black—and at this price, you'll be able to sneak another sweater or two into the season's budget.
Why It's Green:
Made from 65% recycled wool. With fashion being one of the top industries to generate waste (by both manufacturers and consumers), we applaud the use of recycled fabrics in creating new garments and accessories—it helps keep discards and scraps out of landfills, and proves that everything old can indeed be new again. The All-Purpose Gorgeous Handbag
Like dating, handbag shopping boils down to one thing: attraction. You just know it in your bones. Months ago, I began my quest for the All-Purpose Gorgeous Handbag (APGH). The ad could've read something like this: Must be stylish, dependable, rugged, resourceful, street-smart, and city-slick. Dark and handsome a plus. I spent hours trolling online, with the occasional detour for vintage on eBay. No luck. A phone call to a designer store, dialed in a fever from spotting my APGH in a fashion mag, made me laugh like a hyena at the price: $15,000. I put the mag away and decided to stop my search for awhile. But—as with dating—sometimes the right thing comes along just when you stop looking. I popped into the Gap on a quick hosiery errand and there it was: A richly colored, winsome hobo—large enough to carry my folded umbrella, gloves, scarf, mail and paperback, yet comfy on my shoulder with its wide webbed strap. The accent buckles are stylish, and side patch pockets perfect for quick-grab essentials. Everything I was looking for—and at the budget-happy price of $39.50. A quick glance at the tag gave me all the more reason to fall: "Made of 65% recycled wool." I think I'm in love.
