Mom Made's First Fish Recipe

Item Posted: AUG 27, 2007

The perfect introduction to fish, which is rich in vitamin A, lean protein and omega 3 fatty acids—great for the brain development of babies from 9 – 12 months old (or as recommended by your family care provider). Make this for your baby, and if you end up packing this to a play date or baby party, don't be surprised if it ends up taking center stage in the conversation.

First Fish

1 large sweet potato
10 fresh sage leaves, washed
1 tablespoon of butter
1 ½ cups of whole milk
3 ounces of fresh tilapia, skinned and de-boned (haddock or cod also work well)

1. Start by making your own sweet potato purée. Wash, peel then chop into small cubes. Place in boiling water on stove for approximately 20 minutes (or until soft to touch with fork). With slotted spoon, place cooked sweet potato in blender. Purée and add water from cooking as needed to reach desired consistency.

2. Over medium heat, place butter in frying pan and sauté sage leaves for one minute. Add milk to pan, then add fish. Cover to poach fish for 6-7 minutes or until it flakes when touched with fork. With slotted spoon, remove fish from pan, leaving sage and milk in pan to discard.

3. Carefully add very small pieces of fish to sweet potato purée, while checking for bones. Portion baby's serving into a separate small bowl. Test warmth before serving to baby—baby food should never be served hot.

4. Cover and refrigerate extra portions. Gently reheat to serve for another meal. Use within 3 days. —Recipe by Mom Made's Heather Stouffer

Use organic milk and butter to ensure that your little one isn't ingesting artificial growth hormones that are injected into conventional cows to boost milk production.
