Many toys designed for intimate use are made with plastic containing polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), a chemical that's linked to a variety of cancers, and phthalates, a plastic softener associated with infertility. Neither are good for the environment, persisting in landfills (PVC isn't very recyclable) and leaching into the soil and waterways (as phthalates do). Plus, industry-wide, adult toys go unregulated. So to make good lovin' clean and green, phthalate and PVC-free instruments are the way to go. You can also purchase a toy made out of durable metal or glass so you won't have to replace it; use models that don't require batteries; or use a solar-powered battery charger to increase energy efficiency.
