The Case for Compact Fluorescent Lights:

If every American home replaced one bulb with an Energy Star CFL, the greenhouse gas emissions of 800,000 cars would be prevented from going into the atmosphere. You'd save about $30 on energy costs over the life of each bulb.

Burning Torch's spring collection

Why It's Good:

Mix complex statement pieces with clean staples for a killer wardrobe this spring. Burning Torch has both—effortless basics, as well as some amazing printed fancy tops like this gorgeous vintage-scarf tee.

Why It's Green:

The patterned tee is made from recycled silk scarves, which were rescued from the discard pile, cut up and pieced together with perfection. (You could raid your mother’s lingerie drawer, but we don’t think you’ll find a chicer combo than these here.) Other pieces, like a voile blouse, pant and skirt, are made of organically grown cotton, which means the crop thrived without the use of toxic pesticides or fertilizers that harm the land as well as the hands that harvest it.

Sexy Spring Signature Pieces

We're in a free fashion era—from one season to the next, it's like a Greatest Hits of styles, with runways jumping from '80s punkettes to '40s-era Gal Fridays. Burning Torch's pieces, however, with their strong, unique presence and fresh jolts of color, can remain in constant style for the life of the garment. This stunning silk top, $235 (pictured), and scarves tunic dress, $350, conjure images of big-sunglassed starlets on the beach in St. Tropez- and strolls through Tuscan flower markets. Plus, they're one-of-a-kind—and of course, vintage is hotter than ever, if only because we're the kind of women who reject carbon-copied looks. But we're also sophisticated enough to know that statement pieces require balance—like this subtly striped, tan pant (great with the tee), $215, and this sweet, scoop-pocket skirt $180. Minimalism mixed with originality—such as this cotton voile blouse, $260, equals perfection.—Elizabeth McMullen
