Fast Food Effect:

"People used to buy local food from the marketplace and eat it with family and friends. It was a celebration of life. Something happened when fast food came in: It separated us from the seasons, nature and the ritual of the table."—Alice Waters, Chez Panisse

Nature's Gate Happy Glow Lucky Bronzing Creme

Nature's Gate Happy Glow Lucky Bronzing Creme

Why It's Good:

Gives you an instant natural-looking glow without the scary potential side effects of the sun (wrinkles, melanoma) or self-tanners (streaks, an orange glow), and it washes off easily.

Why It's Green:

Certified organic botanical ingredients (elderberry and hibiscus) were grown without pesticides, and the creme is free of parabens (chemical preservatives that some scientists have linked to breast cancer). No animals were harmed in the making of this product.

Where To Get It:

A Terrific Faux Tan

Self-tanners freak me out. The sun probably should have, but never did. For years, I over-tanned every summer. In my late twenties, I wised up, realizing that tans were not only dáclassá, but dangerous. And even though I'm still partial to a little sun-kissed glow, I was never inclined toward self-tanners. The "permanence" of the results is enough to give me a panic attack. Hey, when you're a commitment-phobe, four-ish days is a lifetime, especially given the potential side effects of orange palms and striped legs. So I've always relied on a little bronzer for my face and let that be that … until Happy Glow Lucky came along. This new paraben-free bronzing creme from Nature's Gate is made with certified organic botanicals and gives skin a natural-looking radiance. I use it on my face, dácolletage, shoulders—and even my legs (no streaks!). I love the Fresh Floral scent, but it also comes in Clean Citrus. The best part? The bronzer stays on all day, but washes off when I want it to.

For you risk takers (read: crazy self-tanner types), try the Upper Tanagement Self Tanning Creme with skin-softening certified organic aloe vera, $14.99. I gave it to my self-tanning obsessed friend and she really does look great. I'm still too chicken to try it.
