Twike
Human/Electric Hybrid Vehicle
Why It's Good:
Remember how ultra-cool yet futuristically out-of-reach that Delorean seemed in Back to the Future? We feel the same way about the similarly-winged Twike, which has been popular across the pond for some time, but has not yet found a foothold Stateside. A "human-electric hybrid", this innovative vehicle is being produced one by one at a small factory in Germany. US customers can buy one, but would likely need to visit the Deutschland for training, and back home, buyer beware: You and your owner's manual are on your own. But at 60 mph, this speedy freeway-friendly EV is just the thing our gas-crunched economy needs, so join us in calling for increased demand here at home — or at least, equally innovative technologies. We see no reason not to roll these out!
Why It's Green:
Powered by you and/or a lithium battery, the recumbent Twike features human-assist pedals (which generate about 5% of the power) in the Active version and pure battery energy in the EZ model. Braking is regenerative, which means it helps boost battery power, taking you as far as 38 miles (at a penny or less per mile) on a single charge.
