Eco-Chic Entryway

Nothing says "eco authenticity" like a straw bale home, and this one is a far cry from preconceptions of 70s rusticity as well. That's why we're enamored of the earthy elegance of the Janson residence in Rancho Jamul, a small enclave in San Diego county. Built by the firm Hubbell & Hubbell Artists & Architects, the straw bale structure was pioneered by principal Drew Hubbell as a building material in the city and county of San Diego. This walkway is made with fly ash, a byproduct of coal, and invites you into a courtyard populated by indigenous succulents and low-water Australian exotics.
