Greener Dish Cleaning:

Many dishwashing liquids are non-biodegradable and contain phosphates that harm our freshwater sources. To clean pans without a toxic detergent, fill with cold water, a lot of salt and a slice of onion. Let pan set overnight, then bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Once cool, the burnt food will come right off.

A Bright Idea

You probably know by now that changing your regular incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones are a bright idea: You end up using 75% less energy. Lighting accounts for about 20% of the electricity used in the U.S., so if every American home replaced just one bulb, enough energy would be saved to light 3 million homes a year, preventing more than 800,000 cars' worth of global-warming gases from being released. Factors that might dim the picture? CFLs are bulky and ugly, they flicker and buzz, and cast a harsh shade of light…right? Wrong. Our testers discovered (after trying over 75 different CFLs) the opposite to be the case. Thanks to new technology, today's fluorescent bulbs share little in common with awful office lighting of decades past. Click on our slideshow to learn more about our favorite CFLs for lighting every corner of your home, and on this Sprig List for three quick smart tips for buying them.
