Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort
A green resort in Costa Rica, Central America
Why It's Good:
What's not to love about hot spring cossetted in a rain forest, replete with lagoons, waterfalls, exotic gardens and trails? The Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort in La Fortuna-Arenal was recently renovated to include a new spa situated amid the hotel springs. Its 11 outdoor bungalows offer private Jacuzzis, yoga facilities and local spa treatments like Watsu performed in outdoor thermal river pools; a three-unit Temazcal near the Arenal volcano is overseen by the resort's own shaman. The 114-room property also has a new Mexican chef whipping up a signature Gala Dinner, which is offered in a private rainforest bungalow with a personal server.
Why It's Green:
This resort is a new member of the Leading Hotels of the World and a recipient of the four-leaf designation for Sustainable Tourism. Energy saving practices have been implemented via light sensors in the outdoor garden, common areas and guest rooms. Plus, water is heated by the nearby volcano, a reforestation program is in effect and all organic waste is sent to local farmers.
