What do you give someone who has everything - or says they don't want anything? How about the satisfaction that they're saving anywhere from an eighth of an acre (called a spinney) to a full acre (at 38 pounds or about $75 per) of Amazonian rainforest? The cool thing is that you can pick the acre and they will get a personalized certificate identifying the exact area that they're protecting, plus a unique map reference number allowing them to see their chosen piece of rainforest on the site's map. This has been made possible by a satellite mapping system developed specifically for the organization.
At the current rate of destruction, the largest rainforest in the world will be gone by the year 2020.The rainforest is the source of much of the world's prescribed medicines and a massive heat sink that drives global weather patterns. Its loss will significantly disrupt biodiversity - insects, plants, trees and animals will be destroyed before ever being discovered and named.
