How to Avoid Phthalates:

Beauty companies are not required to list ingredients, so you are not likely to see phthalates, a plastic softener linked to cancer, on labels. Avoid products that list "fragrance," which often contains phthalates; look for essential oils instead.

Phyto Phytocitrus shampoo and reconstructing mask

Why They're Good:

Color-treated hair needs special care and Phyto's Phytocitrus shampoo and restructuring mask is designed to cleanse hair while maintaining color. Grapefruit, chamomile, and wood cellulose extracts combine with castor plant and coconut oils and sweet almond proteins to impart shine and softness.

Why They're Green:

Phyto products contain pure plant extracts, are packaged in recyclable containers such as aluminum, and are never tested on animals. For a hugely popular salon brand, those are great green steps in the right direction, but we wish for an eco-alternative to their use of parabens, preservatives that have been linked to endocrine disruption; and sulfates, harsh cleansers found in most conventional hair care products.

Where To Get Them:

www.sephora.com | $24, $38
