Elephant Heart Plums: Blossom Bluff Orchards, Parlier, CA

Fran Loewen still remembers having her fingernails inspected by her grandparents before being allowed to handle the Elephant Heart plums they grew on their family farm. Today, her pickers wear cotton gloves to protect the fruit's delicate, deep red flesh and the layer of "bloom" that gives them their distinct grayish color. This heirloom variety is too delicate for industrial packing and shipping methods, making them a rare gem in the marketplace. But they're perfectly suited – and prized by chefs – for jam, pastries and even in savory dishes like duck. Loewen says she loves to eat this late-summer plum plain or slice into a salad. "This is my dad's favorite," said Loewen. "He waited all summer for it – still does."
