Steal This Look
by Julie Knapp
The boho braid is a summer favorite among Young Hollywood; styling your own is as easy-breezy as the look.
An ethereal and easy look for summer, the boho braid hit Hollywood's hot list a few years ago with Sienna Miller leading the hippie-chick pack. And now Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Mary Kate Olsen are keeping the face-framing look alive. The style can be clean and polished or you can achieve a more carefree look with wavy tresses like the Full House starlet did here as she showed off this look at the premier of Showtime's Weeds third season. Here, step-by-step instructions, with an eco-twist:
Start with dry hair. Make a deep side part and gather a section of hair 2" to 4" wide along the hairline. Before you begin braiding, brush the section of hair to remove any tangles. Try the animal and cruelty-free Extra Large Paddle Brush from Widu ($45). It's made of 100% FSC-certified wood and natural rubber without using any synthetic materials in manufacturing.
To keep that section of hair smooth and make it easier to create a polished braid, work in a very small amount of 100 percent vegan Jonathan Silky Dirt Shine & Define Cream ($28). A little goes a long way with this cream — it's packed with natural and botanical ingredients that'll help tame frizz and control flyaways. Using this section of hair, create a French braid along your hairline and behind your ear. Continue all the way to the end. If the strands start to get frizzy or become hard to manage as you go, add more shine cream. Secure the braid behind your ear with a couple of bobby pins.
Spritz David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray, ($11.95) throughout, using your hands to twirl and scrunch texture into your hair as you go. Free of sulfates, parabens and petrochemicals, it's filled with natural ingredients from all over the world, including Dead Sea salt for beachy texture, volumizing volcanic ash from the Vanauatu Islands, and a hydrating combination of blue algae, mango and kiwi. Even better, 10% of the profits go to WildAid.
Pull back the rest of your hair into a low ponytail, smoothing out any flyaways with Aveda Brilliant Hair Spray ($13). Black tea along with certified organic aloe, calendula and chamomile will help protect your hair from humidity, add shine and provide hold.
