People and the Planet:

Environmental devastation can lead to war...and worse. Global warming helped bring on the drought in Darfur, which caused farmers and herders to fight for limited land resources. Battle lines were drawn along ethnic lines, leading to today's genocide crisis. By reducing our carbon dioxide output, we can slow global warming. If you drive a hybrid, you can save 16,000 lbs. of CO2 and $3,750 per year.

Herman Miller Eames Sofa

Why It's Good:

This classic, sophisticated sofa has been in production since 1984, so you can be sure it'll never go out of style.

Why It's Green:

Herman Miller has purchased wood from sustainable suppliers since 1991. It also uses water-based stains on wood veneers rather than solvent-based stains, which emit volatile organic compounds. This change also makes Herman Miller products easier to recycle.

The one problem, and it's a big one, is that Herman Miller does use brominated fire retardants — chemicals that are related to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — to meet U.S. fire safety standards. Environmental and consumer advocates are still working to have all brominated fire retardants banned from consumer products.
