Beijing has been making a supremely green effort for the summer Olympics (I know, China and eco in the same thought?). The 2008 Games are even being influenced by the United Nations' Environmental Program, which has tried to impact several aspects of the competition including energy, waste and transportation. Use of natural lighting gets a gold for the Water Cube where a translucent membrane changes thickness to allow more or less light in, and for beam pipes that guide sunlight into underground facilities. Yao Ming has been named the UN's first ever Environmental Champion (all 7 feet and 6 inches of him!) and has spoken in support of making little changes. Hey, if the Olympics gets George Bush to pose for a photo op on a bicycle, anything is possible.
