Conscientious Caviar:

Farm-raised sturgeon caviar is a great alternative to caviar from the Caspian Sea, where Beluga sturgeon have become so overfished for their eggs, they're on the verge of extinction. And unlike farmed salmon roe, cultivated sturgeon isn't raised in pens in open water, but in tanks on land, where waste can be more easily disposed of. — Slowfoodnation.org

The basic black dress — a fall and winter wardrobe staple — begs for accessorizing. Instead of a new clutch or heels, we suggest making your face the focal point, like rising star Eva Green does when walking the red carpet. The actress — who played Daniel Craig's love interest in the last Bond flick and the witch Serafina Pekkala in The Golden Compass — knows that smoldering eyes and bold red lips are sure to garner attention, yet still look as classy and chic as the perfect little black dress. And with the help of a few expert tips and eco-friendly products, this high-drama look can be naturally beautiful, too.

1. Be Bold With Black Liner

Dark eyeliner is super dramatic, but for many, applying it can be traumatic. Don't stress about keeping your liner perfectly straight, though: The beauty of the smoky eye is that it's slightly un-done and you'll eventually be smudging the line, says New York City makeup artist Emily Kate Warren. You can even use a pencil with a blunt tip instead of a sharp point, as it will create a fatter, messier line. Try Josie Maran's Black Eye Liner. Start at the inside of each eye and trace along the upper and lower lash lines continuing the line all the way into the inner and outer corners. Next, use a smudge brush (like ecoTools' Bamboo Eye Shading Brush) to spread the color out from the line. Just gently brush back and forth along the line, using short strokes—almost like you're erasing a pencil mark, says Warren. To set the line in place, top with a light dusting of a matte black mineral eye shadow, like bareMinerals Liner Shadow in Onyx

2. . . . And With Black Lashes

For lush lashes, Warren suggests pulling your mascara wand out of the tube and waiting about 15 to 30 seconds before swiping it on (we love Korres Deep Colour Mascara in Black 01). This lets the formula get a little chunky and gummy, which really amps up the volume. "Then, use the tip of the wand, which has the most product on it, to apply mascara at your roots from left to right," suggests Warren, who says this will make the roots look thicker than the ends.

3. Add Some Shimmer to the Smokiness

Loose mineral eye shadows are perfect for giving your lids some sparkle, as they're made from naturally reflective, finely ground minerals. "Dust one all over your lids to get a pretty sheen, and then if you want to intensify certain areas, try dipping your brush into a droplet of water before picking up the pigments to darken the color," says Warren. Jane Iredale's PurePressed Eye Shadow in Platinum gives eyes a luminous, silver tint like Green's.

4. Blush, but Barely

"To avoid looking too pale and goth, add a sheer cream blush and blend it with your fingers," suggests Warren. Just be sure to keep the blush light and translucent, as too much color all over is . . . well, too much color. Try Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Sheerest Cream Blush in a light pink hue.

5.  Makeover Your Mouth

For fierce red lips, forgo gloss and keep your mouth matte. Warren says to use a lip liner to both line and fill in color. As for choosing the right red, pick a bright, primary shade because it should work for all skin tones. Check out Dr. Hauschka's Lipliner in Novum Garnet. To keep the edge from looking too severe, first moisten your mouth with a bit of balm, then trace around the lips using the side of the pencil instead of the tip. Finally, shade your entire mouth, still using the side of the pencil, then blot lips together.
