Equal Exchange Chocolates

Why They're Good:

This chocolate is not only good, it's positively grand. Throughout our taste test, time and again, people voted these bars the "best of" the category in question — mint, orange, almond — frequently turning the bars over to note the maker. Well, the word is out! And we agree: this is up there with the very best chocolate — supermarket, gourmet, what have you — we've ever had the pleasure to sink our sweet tooth into. Try the cool mint and robust espresso; they'll instantly replace your current favorites.

Why They're Green:

Equal Exchange is all about fair trade (hence the name). The company has been treating and paying farmers fairly for their products for more than 20 years, toward a goal of establishing long-term, equitable partnerships with democratic farmer cooperatives in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States.

Equal Exchange itself operates on a worker-cooperative model, with workers sharing in profits. The chocolate is made from organic- and fair-trade certified cocoa from coops in Peru, Panama and the Dominican Republic; most other ingredients are also organic and fair trade.
