Campi Ya Kanzi
An eco-lodge in Kenya, Africa
Why It's Good:
Owned by a couple from Italy, Campi Ya Kanzi is part of Micato Safaris' "bespoke collection" of private camps and lodges. Travelers can tailor a perfect getaway, including a stay at an eco-lodge like Campi Ya Kanzi, which is located at the foothills of Kilimanjaro. After a long day of game driving, bird watching or sunset cocktails and dinner in the bush, guests can return to a tented cottage with a private terrace and enjoy stunning views of the plains. Early risers may witness a parade of zebras meander right past their front yard while enjoying their morning coffee or tea.
Why It's Green:
The property's electricity is generated by solar panels and its water is heated by a solar boiler. In addition, the camp has set up a Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which takes $40 per day of each guest's stay and donates it to the local Maasai people to promote their conservation efforts with farming, water diversion, and live stock management. Tour operator Micato Safaris continues to provide education, food, clothing and shelter to thousands of children living in the Mukur Slum in Nairobi through its non-profit foundation, AmericaShare. In essence, guests are giving back twice by embarking on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
