Conventionally-grown cotton is one of the most toxic crops: One-third of a pound of pesticides is used to make just one non-organic T-shirt, while zero is used to make organic tees.
When it comes to thigh-skimming, Lolita-like skirts, Catholics do it best, or at least most pervasively, having given us the garment that epitomizes schoolgirl chic. Our favorite interpretation comes by way of Myth and Ritual: A plaid and pleated bottom saturated in inky blues and constructed with a high waist that adds nipped-in sophistication to a supremely youthful skirt. For a more traditional rendition, we look to Camilla Norrback whose solid black, side-button mini compels in its details.
Fall 2008 runways saw lengthier, Puritan-esque remakes by designers like Alexis Mabille who showed love to all-girl boarding schools through full, solid color knee-length skirts. For a look that we can rock off the runway, we're particularly fond of Myth and Ritual's mustard yellow Barcelona Skirt for its single, center pleat and art-school patterns.
