The Sprig List
10 Eco-Chic Websites
Sites that make you (and the Earth) look good.
Not all green style is created equal (face it: some eco jeans make your butt look better than others). So we scoured the internet for the 10 best sites offering chic and environmentally-conscious information about fashion, food, gardening, and decorating, taking care to include a range of styles that offer something for everyone, whether you're a Berkeley student, New York lawyer, Iowan mom — and everything in between.
1. EcoFabulous
ecofabulous.blogs.com
The dish: The brainchild of a former fashion-designer-turned-blogger named Zem Joaquin, EcoFabulous introduces readers to "sustainable, sexy stuff." Joaquin and her editors adhere to a specific vision — what she likes is what gets posted — and the result is a lineup of unique finds. Readers also score access to a wide variety of products, thanks to Joaquin's background as a fashion designer, as well as her current gig as a Domino magazine contributor.
Perfect for: Upscale hippies; fashionistas; dog lovers
You'll find: This Greek goddess-goes-to-work look, which gets its gray hue from organic dyes.
2. Eco Chick
www.eco-chick.com
The dish: Seriousness of purpose and good humor inform this blog, created "because mother earth is a woman." Headed by Australian Starre Vartan and her band of writers based in California, Connecticut, Cologne, Germany and elsewhere, the site offers fashion and beauty picks, as well as scientific abstracts, short personal essays, and feminist musings. Rather than sounding shrill, the site's thoughtful posts manage to strike a perfect balance of levity and gravitas — not surprising, perhaps, since Vartan just finished an MFA in non-fiction writing at Columbia University.
Perfect for: Chic moms, stylish scientists and twenty- and thirty-somethings living in Seattle, Austin, Portland, Ore., Madison, Chapel Hill and other emerging cities with a conscience.
You'll find: A charming advice column that's sadly not updated enough; companies that sell green baby products; and, for a night out on the town, an organic-cocktail recipe.
3. Inhabitat
www.inhabitat.com
The dish: If you believe that the buildings in which you live and work affect the way you think, feel, and act, this website might become a go-to source for inspiration. The blog zeroes in on "future-forward design for the world you inhabit," with an emphasis on interior design and architecture seen through the lens of new technology, materials, and urban-planning trends. Inhabitat's founder, Jill Fehrenbacher, as well as many of her editors, has a background in architecture, art, and urban planning, and many posts introduce cool new buildings or technological discoveries, as opposed to, say, sustainable decorations for interiors — it's more Dwell than House Beautiful.
Perfect for: Tech geeks; hip urbanites; people planning to build or buy a home
You'll find: This stunning home that might make you wish you made more money, and this sustainable sofa, which has a sweet drawing-room appeal.
