A Better Battery:

Americans use two billion disposable batteries a year, 75% of which contains mercury, a toxic substance that can leak from landfills into soil and groundwater. For an eco-friendly alternative, buy rechargeable batteries.

Thyme in the Country

1. Getaway Green

Planning a weekend getaway? Make it a green one at Thyme In The Country, an eco B&B in Hudson, New York. A quick and carbon-light trip from New York City, this well-equipped green hotel is a vacation in itself. Replete with lots of on-site activities and an enviably eco profile, you'll feel both good and green.

2.  All Aboard For An Eco Expedition

The autumn-leaf-viewing drive through the country might be tradition, but it sure isn't eco-friendly. Why not join your neighbors and reduce your carbon footprint this year by taking a New England Fall Foliage Trip By Train? Glide along the Connecticut River or climb a 3-mile trestle to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Taking the train emits less than half the pounds of carbon dioxide as driving your car.

3. Spread Your Wings

One of the most eco-friendly hobbies around, bird watching can be done with minimal equipment and in your own backyard — no expensive gear or carbon-heavy trips required. Get birding and get back to nature. Start with a short jaunt to Cape May, New Jersey, for the 62nd annual Cape May Autumn Festival, October 24-26. Take an eco tour of a salt marsh and learn about native birds.

4. Stay Green

Bean Town beauties don't have to travel far for an eco getaway. Spend a weekend at the brand new Element Lexington (just a hop, skip and a jump from Boston) and nourish your body in a green hotel dedicated to keeping Mother Earth in mind.

5. Decorate Eco

Pass on the store-bought, high-VOC varnished cornucopia this year and forage from nature instead. Try piling colorful autumn leaves in a decorative bowl, for instance. You can also display seasonal gourds in a basket, make a pinecone wreath or just drape a fall-hued silky scarf over a small table and arrange twigs, pine cones, interesting rocks, leaves and gourds on it. Add small felt or wooden figures found in the miniatures section of your local craft store for a fabulous, eco-friendly fall display.
