A Better Battery:

Americans use two billion disposable batteries a year, 75% of which contains mercury, a toxic substance that can leak from landfills into soil and groundwater. For an eco-friendly alternative, buy rechargeable batteries.

Why It's Good:

This ultra-casual jean is the pair to pack for weekend getaways. Whether hiking a hill or kicking back on a cottage porch, you'll look as chic in the country as you do in the city.

Why It's Green:

A favorite of the fashion set, Earnest Sewn introduced "Greencaste", a super-eco denim capsule collection, to coincide with Barneys' 2007 green holiday program. Greencaste flew off the shelves and has yet to be reincarnated, but the company remains committed to sustainable manufacturing processes, notably, its "surface-source" water-treatment plan.

The denim industry consumes massive amounts of water and is known for dumping dyes, bleaches and fabric-softening chemicals into our waterways. Instead of using sub-surface water — which can't be recycled in an eco-positive way — Earnest Sewn takes dirty river water, cleans it for use in their wash processes, and then re-treats it, leaving it in better shape than when it found it. Earnest Sewn jeans are cut, washed and sewn in the United States.
